Ruth Bader Ginsberg

Ruth Bader Ginsberg (1933-2020) was an American lawyer who served on the Supreme Court of the United Sates from 1993 until her death at the age of 87. She attended Yale, Harvard, and Columbia after having given birth to her first child. She was a wife and mother of two children. She worked doggedly to fight for gender equality, women’s rights, and came in to her own during which time these things were sorely needed and overdue in the world. Victor Hugo once said that there is “No greater power than an idea whose time has come”. The notorious RBG brought forth the ideas of freedom and equality for women, and ushered changes into our society which forever changed the freedoms and guaranteed rights to women. Many women and girls look up to RBG for the life she lived, the convictions she held, and the sacrifices she made through her work to improve the lives of others.

I typed her portrait because I love her strength. In her later life she refused to retire despite her illnesses and injuries including colon cancer, pancreatic cancer, a surgery to remove cancer from her left lung and three broken ribs sustained by a fall in her office. She wasn’t a large woman and stood only 5’5” tall, yet she had an indomitable strength and hawkish gaze that made people take note of and listen to her ideas. She was a true example to me of what it means to speak from a position of knowledge, reason and to dedicate your life to causes you feel passionate about.
